1. The Tunguska event, which was recently in news, happened in which year?

Note:- The Tunguska event occurred on June 30, 1908, involving a massive explosion caused by the airburst of a very large stony meteoroid near Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Russia. It resulted in the destruction of over 80 million trees spanning across an area of 2,150 square kilometre of forest. It is estimated that at least 3 people may have lost their lives to this event. The impact crater that has caused this incident was not found. It may have disintegrated before it reached the surface of the Earth. This event is the largest impact event in the recorded history. Much bigger impacts may have occurred during the prehistoric era.

Note:- Virachey National Park is one of the two Cambodian ASEAN Heritage Parks located at the northeastern part of the country and spanning across more than 3,000 square kilometres. It overlaps Ratanakiri and Stung Treng Provinces. The national park, under the jurisdiction of the Cambodian Ministry of Environment, consists of semi-evergreen lowlands, montane forests, upland savannah, and several patches of mixed deciduous forests. Illegal logging is a major concern in this national forest since the 2000s, leading to a vast expanse of forest being degraded at an exponential scale. However, this situation has improved over the recent years. The rare sighting of giant muntjac in the recent months is the outcome of this progress.

Note:- The Glacial Lake Atlas of Ganga Basin was recently released by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. It analyses changes in water bodies in the Himalayan regions over a period, which can then be used for studying the impacts of climate change and for pre-planning the disaster response. Around 4,000 glacial lakes have been mapped in the Ganga River basin, with the aggregate lake water covering an area of 20,685 hectares. The atlas is currently available on Bhuvan portal of ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). It provides latest information on the expansion or shrinkage of glacial lakes. It also monitors the addition of new lakes during a particular period of time.

She is the youngest female player ever to qualify for the title of grandmaster and the youngest ever to win the Women’s World Chess Championship.

Note:- Panchmuli lake, situated near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel ‘Statue of Unity’ in Kevadia, Gujarat. It was seen in the news because as many as 194 crocodiles have been relocated from the lake in the last two years for the safety of tourists. As per the officials, 143 crocodiles were relocated in 2019-20 and 51 crocodiles were shifted to two rescue centres in 2020-21.

India was placed at 20th place. New Delhi and Mumbai were at 14th and 16th position (worldwide). 43 Indian cities got placed in the list of 100 countries. The top five countries are USA, UK, Israel, Canada and Germany. The top five cities in the Index are San Francisco, New York, Beijing, Los Angeles and London.
