New Democracy, Mao Zedong's Concept

Mao Zedong was the leader of the successful revolution in China. According to him the new democratic revolution "is an anti-imperialist and anti-feudal revolution of the broad masses of the people under the leadership of the proletariat." Mao Zedong wanted to establish a new system of administration, what he called New democracy in China. By overthrowing imperialism and the forces of feudalism, who can lead the people can win the people's confidence because these two are the mortal enemies of the people.
The concept of New Democracy was founded by Mao was in contrast with the Soviet-Style Dictatorship of the Proletariat. Mao said that he wanted to create a new China which is free from the feudal and semi-feudal aspects of its own culture as well as Japanese Imperialism. Thus he wanted to create a new culture and a new Economy along with a New Democracy of the four revolutionary classes i.e. Peasants, Proletariat, Intelligentsia, and Petit Bourgeoise to protect these institutions. He said that only these four classes can together overcome the counter-revolutionary measures taken by the National Bourgeoise of China to protect its own feudal practice of Slavery in the Third World countries.

By overthrowing feudalism, the main aim of the New Democracy is to achieve independence from colonialism. However, it reflects Karl Marx's view of capitalism that a capitalist class would usually follow such a struggle, claiming instead to seek to enter directly into socialism through a coalition of classes fighting the old ruling order. This view was shared by Vladimir Lenin, who had broken with the Mensheviks over the idea that the working class could organize and lead the 'Democratic Revolution' in an underdeveloped country. The Chinese Communists hoped that the working class in a similar fashion could then build full-brown socialism and communism despite the competing class interests of the social classes of the 'bloc'.

The stars of China's flag symbolizes the bloc of classes reflecting the principles of New Democracy. The surrounding four smaller stars symbolizing the bloc of Four Classes, proletarian workers, peasants, the petty bourgeoisie, and the nationally based capitalists whereas the largest star indicates the Communist Party of China's leadership. As Mao described in his work, this is the coalition of four classes. Lenin described that Mao's new democracy explained the Bloc of four classes as an unfortunate but necessary consequence. According to Lenin, unfortunately, Mao's New Democracy explains the Bloc of four classes but the necessary consequence of imperialism.

The New Democracy that Mao talked of is a joint dictatorship of all the revolutionary classes and the system of government in this state system is democratic centralism.
